October 1st, 1988 - Saturday Morning, Time to get Going

Saturday morning arrived and I was packed and ready to go. I had never been on a Rail Diesel Car or RDC before this trip; so I though. Years later, I do have some memory of a trip quite some time before where we had gone on vacation in Ontario and took an RDC train from Oshawa to Toronto.

You see, what makes my excitement of the time so remarkable is not the fact that I had never been a train before. As a matter of fact, my familly had gone on yearly vacations to Toronto or Montreal by train. However, before my thirteeth birthday, I had viewed each event on it's own with excitement being of the moment. This time was different, perhaps I was old enough to have a 'hobby' or attention span long enough to appreciate the here and now.

Now, considering it was Saturday morning, I would have normally been watching cartoons. At the time, it would have been the Looney Toons, Voltron or Transformers. However, the extent of my new found focus kept me from the television. Besides the love of trains and travel, I had also started to fine tune the art of packing light. Having been packed for days, I of course, repack to make sure that I have everything: Walkman with mixed tapes, camera with extra film, cloths, snacks and entertainment aka my first Railway themed magazine.

Ok, 11:00 AM, time to leave for the station. My grand-father arrived to bring us to the station. Our ride was a 1970's green Chevrolet Impala 2-door about 30ft long and a trunk that could easily fit a spare...car, a mini for example but that's another story. See you at the station.
